Louïse Papier, a young artist from Brest, released her first EP "Les Idées Roses" after receiving acclaim for her debut single "Spark Again". Her music is characterized by dreamy yet disillusioned lyrics, synth-pop sounds, and a distinct 80s influence. The EP features vintage drum machines, synthesizers, and sensual vocals, with similarities to artists such as OMD, Jacno, Molly Nilsson, and John Maus.
Music From The Masses, a label founded by Brest record store Bad Seeds, was initially created to support local talent, particularly young artists. Although the label has since expanded to include more established artists from outside the region, they have come back to their roots with Louïse Papier's "Les Idées Roses" EP, which embraces the local scene. Blanche Leblond, the real name of Louïse Papier, is an active member of the electro scene in Brest and has previously collaborated with Lesneu on three tracks from their last album.
Victor Gobbé, who is also known as Lesneu, lent his technical and drumming skills to the EP, which remains true to Louïse Papier's vintage aesthetic. Her powerful, majestic vocals bear resemblance to those of Victoria Legrand from Beach House, a major influence on many young artists, including Lesneu. Despite its retro-inspired beats and minimalist keyboard sound, "Les Idées Roses" features a range of emotions, including melancholy, longing, and a touch of synthwave darkness in "Spark Again" and "Rescue Me". The EP also features French lyrics that immediately captivate listeners, reminiscent of the broken dreams of Slowdance, a French-American duo whose promising start ended in heartbreak.
The EP concludes with a surprising, dark cover of a 1990s teen anthem, providing a fitting end to a collection of songs that promise a bright future for Louïse Papier. She has already proven her talent for crafting addictive, hypnotic pop with "Les Idées Roses", drawing inspiration from the gothic and melodic styles of John Maus and Deux. While referencing 80s underground music, Louïse Papier's EP is also a reflection of the current uncertain times, offering a unique blend of danceable sadness, synth-pop, and deep humanity.
